Elettren

1940s -

Italian model railway company Elettren were started just after the end of World War Two by Armando Ravasini, and some of the most authoritative sources on model railways have gone on the record as saying that the quality of Elettren's finest gauge 0 model carriages have never been bettered.

Characteristics

Elettren specialise in finescale brass 1:43.5 models, and use a variety of modern techniques including acid etching and lasercutting.

Where most companies would take an existing manufacturing technique and use it to produce models, Elettren's "signature" was to research and develop any new techniques that might improve any aspect of their coaches - the flagship Elettren coaches would pride themselves on using "nonstandard" methods, or methods that weren't commonly in use by their competitors.

Best examples

The best-known Elettren coaches are their rather gorgeous "Wagons-Lit" luxury carriages, two of which are on the museum's central 1930s gauge 0 layout.
