Martin Carthy is an artist who needs no introduction. An iconic figure on the British folk scene, his work spans six decades and remains amongst the most influential oeuvre in modern folk music. A true collaborator, Martin is as recognised for his work with The Watersons, Steeleye Span and his own daughter, Eliza Carthy, as he is for his own solo work.
We are delighted and honoured to have Martin open our second season of events at The Toy Museum Folk Club. Mairearad Green and Anna Massie have each made a name for themselves as incredibly talented multi-instrumentalists in their own right, but as a duo they represent something special, and more than the sum of their parts. One of the warmest, most engaging live acts on the folk scene today, Mairearad and Anna bring exquisite musicianship to every gig. It’s a joy to watch the duo and attempt to comprehend just how so much gorgeous music is being played by only two musicians.
This is a chance to catch the pair in a unique venue, playing their music to an intimate audience of fans, vintage stuffed toys and model trains!
“…the camaraderie and sheer fun of musical collaboration is plainly evident and infectious.” (Songlines)
Fancy ‘a pint, a pie and a performance’ in a quirky, unique venue?
As part of the national ‘Museums at Night’ event, Brighton Toy and Model Museum is delighted to present ‘Two Halves of Guinness’ – a one man play from the West End, written by Mark Burgess, performed by Trevor Littledale.
Mark Burgess’ funny and insightful play sees Trevor Littledale offer an uncanny portrayal of Alec Guinness reflecting on acting, faith, family, and his shattering insecurity, played to a background of the golden days of British film and theatre.
We join Sir Alec in the late 70’s, as Star Wars is set to become one of the biggest films of all time, featuring his iconic performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Amidst fears he will be remembered only as a Jedi Knight, Sir Alec hadn’t counted on the involvement of a master spy ….
“a first class performance …. A great piece of writing and performance” The Times

We can’t wait to bring Emily to our unique space in Brighton’s toy and model museum – an opportunity to watch her perform in an intimate space before she can only be found in larger venues! Support is yet to be announced, but will come from one of the many fine Sussex folk acts that the Toy Museum Folk Club and our partners Folkroom are working with.

Ewan McLennan has, in a short space of time, come to be known as a guitarist at the forefront of his generation; a singer and a songwriter that can move audiences with his passion and pathos. The songs he sings and writes are rooted in traditional songs and the tradition of folk music as social commentary. Here’s a rare opportunity to watch Ewan McLennan in a venue like no other.
Support comes from Bird in the Belly. A new folk collective from Brighton, Bird in the Belly recently released their debut album ‘The Crowing’, upon which they breathed new life into folk songs that had rarely (or never) been recorded before. They’re a brilliant live act, and round off an unmissable line-up.
“In many ways Ewan McLennan is the perfect embodiment of modern folk song. An outstanding guitarist, a magnificent interpreter of traditional song and an immensely gifted songwriter.” (Spiral Earth)

Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith are one of the finest duos to have emerged onto the British folk and acoustic scene in recent years. Their combination of outstanding vocal work, sensitive instrumentation, and a powerful social conscience has brought them widespread critical acclaim.
We’re thrilled to be hosting the pair one night after their new album launch in London. Support for the evening is yet to be announced, but we promise they’ll be wonderful too.
“To be a great folk singer, you have to be a great storyteller, as Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith are clearly aware. The duo are both fine singers and multi-instrumentalists.” (The Guardian)

THE FLYING SCOTSMAN BACK IN BRIGHTON
This, possibly the most famous steam locomotive in the world, made a momentous visit to Brighton in 1962, for the one and only time, attracting considerable attention. In tribute to this most iconic of steam locomotives, on Saturday 17th October, the Brighton Toy and Model Museum will present the “Flying Scotsman” locomotive and examples of the crack London to Edinburgh express service it was named after, running in scale model form. The Museum’s extensive world famous O gauge model railway layout will operate the representations of various phases of the train, since it’s inception in 1862, using models by top makers of the time. Included will be many scarce models not often operated because of their rarity and age, except on special occasions, such as this.
The Flying Scotsman locomotive, built by Sir Nigel Gresley in 1923, continued in service right up to British Rail’s dieselation of motive power in 1963. From it’s earliest days it ranked as “Concorde” or the QEII” as the zenith of british transport engineering. After “retirement” , it was privately owned by various individuals and operated on rail-tours in the UK, USA and finally in Australia. In the USA the tour ran into financial difficulties and was seized by US creditors. Fortunately Sir William McAlpine paid off the debt and organised the return of the locomotive back to the UK. The Flying Scotsman is presently undergoing final restoration to main-line running by the National Railway Museum, it’s present home, in 2016. Sir William is to be thanked for rescuing an icon of British transport heritage from the clutches of US liquidators, as it’s days would have surely ended in US posession. The Brighton Toy & Model Museum is also pleased to rank Sir William as one of it’s Patrons.
The Brighton Toy and Model Museum’s special “Flying Scotsman” themed running day on Saturday 17th of October will see the trains in operation from 11.00 to 1.00 and 2.30 to 4.30, the Museum being open from 10.30 to 5.00. The Museum is directly beneath the Brighton Main Line railway station forecourt, a stone’s throw from where the “real” Flying Scotsman stood in 1962.
