Although Britains Ltd. had made their mark on the toy market with hollowcast lead figures, lead was obviously going to have to be phased out at some point due to its toxicity. ABritains made the move to plastics in the 1950s, helped by its takeover of plastic figure manufacturer Herald Miniatures Ltd.

Britains started distributing some of Herald's range in 1956 and started producing Swoppets in 1958, and the convergence between the two companies completed in 1959 with Britains finally formalising their takeover of Herald. Britains Floral Garden then appeared in 1960. By this time, the market swing to plastics seemed unstoppable, resulting in Britains discontinuing the (mostly diecast) Lilliput range at the end of 1960.
