Mobil were a lubricant and petrol company who started as the Vacuum Oil Company in 1866 before, predictably, becoming part of Rockefeller’s monolithic Standard Oil Company in 1879. This meant they were also part of the 1911 forcible dissolution of Standard Oil by the Sherman Antitrust Act, so the newly independent company underwent the long, tortuous sequence of mergers and name changes many other formerly affiliated oil companies experienced at the time.

Despite selling their Mobil oil products since the late 19th century, their name only changed to reflect that of their popular product by 1955.

In 1999 the company merged with Exxon to form ExxonMobil. The original company retains its individual brand identity and remains in use worldwide.
