Scale Models by Ratio

1950 - 1959

Ratio Scale Models was created in 1950 by the Webster brothers, Jack and Dave, trading as the Webster Development Company. The company produced a range of wood and printed papers models of rolling stock superstructure and railway buildings: it was left to the builder to add wheels/bogies and couplings.

Advertising and box artwork usually referred to "Scale Models by Ratio".

The company then started producing plastic kits in 1959, becoming Ratio Plastic Models, and were eventually taken over by Peco in the 1990s.

1958: BR Push-Pull Coach "Wren", Ratio kit No. 675

1958 description

Ratio Coach Body Kits

This range of kits for building coach bodies has been especially designed for the Model Railway enthusiast who wishes to add to his line an authentic scale model coach in the minimum amount of time, at a very reasonable cost. There is a wide and interesting range from which to choose – corridor coaches for main line operation, steam and electric; full compartment coaches for local service; the single car or push-pull coach for working branch lines. For old time interest there are the clerestory roof coaches of the old Great Western Railway, and to be right up to date there are the new British Railway 2 Car Diesel set, also single car units. To complete your coach you will need bogies, roof ventilators, buffers, and couplings.

Ratio Railway Buildings Kits

Ratio railway buildings in kit-form are easy and fascinating to build; are authentic in design, with super detail. Walls and roofs are made of ready-cut plywood, all openings are die-cut. Special 1/8 in square grooved wood join walls and ceiling. Windows are die-cut white plastic: Building papers and clear instructions.

Ratio Wagon and Van Body kits

You can easily build an attractive model from these kits, as all parts are cut to exact size, and all openings die-cut. Wheels, buffers, couplings and axle-guards are not included, but left to your discretion to suit type of track on which they will be used.
