Between Sept. 15-21, 1968, '''Zond 5''' made the first unmanned flight around the Moon and back to Earth, landing its capsule by parachute to the Indian Ocean. 
Its ‘passengers’ included turtles, wine flies, mealworms, lysogenic bacteria and various plants and seeds. 

'''Zond 6 and 7''', in Nov. 1968 and Aug. 1969 made similar circumlunar flights, but were recovered in the Soviet Union.
