Ford
The Ford Motor Company was founded in Detroit by Henry Ford and 11 investors in 1903. Their famous Model T’s arrival in 1908 was a landmark in economic design and production techniques, contributing to vastly increased accessibility of motor vehicles. The company had to develop more innovative new manufacturing techniques such as moving assembly lines to meet the large demand for the car. By 1914, more than half a million Model Ts had been sold; by 1923, the company made more than half of all American automobiles.
Fordson was the brand name used by Ford & Son Corp, a separate company from The Ford Motor Company, which Ford created in 1910 to circumvent board resistance to his plans to begin to manufacture tractors. The expansion proved to be a smart move when demand for tractors rocketed during World War I. By 1920, Ford had full control of The Ford Motor Company and the tractor division was integrated into the main company, but the name was kept, and also used for other commercial vehicles.
Fordson Thames was the brand name used for Ford commercial vehicles in Europe from 1939 – 1957.
Despite having to sell off many of the assets it acquired over the years, including major companies like Jaguar and Aston Martin, Ford has endured the sharp downturn in the American automobile manufacturing industry relatively well.
