A "free" interpretation of the "Ouse Valley Viaduct" (also known as the "Balcombe Viaduct"), in 00-gauge.
The 00-gauge model necessarily shows a certain degree of artistic licence, since a true scale model of the original, with its thirty-seven arches, would have been far too long to incorporate in the layout.
The model is in the "countryside" section of the large 00-gauge layout, in Arch Three.
The Original
TransportHeritage.com describe the viaduct as "Probably the most elegant viaduct in Britain".
Completed in 1842, the viaduct was engineered by John Urpeth Rastrick, who had previously been involved in building some of the world's earliest steam locomotives, and had built a cast-iron bridge over the river Wye.
The viaduct is a Grade 2 Listed Building, and is still in heavy use today (and still much-loved by photographers!).
