The original puppet was made in about ~1932 by Fred Tickner for the '''Hogarth Puppet Circus'''. Annette Mills (sister of John Mills) found the puppet, named him Muffin, and in 1946 started to co-present a BBC children's tv show "For the Children" that was later renamed "Muffin and his Friends", with puppeteer Ann Hogarth operating Muffin from behind the scenery.
The show's theme song had Annette Mills trilling,
: ''"Here comes Muffin, Muffin the Mule''
: ''Dear old Muffin, playing the fool ..."''
while Muffin danced about on top of her piano.
The Museum's "Muffin" marionette currently lives in the Museum office, but can be brought out on request.
