A painted hollowcast lead Hippopotamus, from the Britains Zoo range, probably pre-war, catalogue number 905.

Giulia ...
" This hippopotamus is standing on its four big legs that really strong and powerful to support such a heavy animal. Even though it is only a model it gives people the idea of a heavy piece. From its expression we can see a little sadness but don't worry, it's typical of this animal. This model is carefully painted with two types of brown: one light on the stomach and on its muzzle, the rest of the body is painted with a dark brown. "

1940 catalogue description

" These enormous animals come from Central Africa, and a smaller species from West Africa. They live almost entirely in the water, where they can move about with remarkable ease and speed, despite their great weight, which for a fully-grown male is about 3-4 tons. "
