A model Howdah (or "houda"h) for an Elephant, designed to fit the back of a painted lead elephant from the Britains Zoo range, catalogue number 938.

1940 catalogue description

" The howdah we have chosen is the one commonly seen at the Zoological Gardens, where the novelty of riding on the back of a mammoth is greatly enjoyed, but the howdahs used by some Indian Potentates are gorgeous structures with silken handings richly decorated. "
