Lincoln Logs specialised in building construction sets based on the "log cabin" construction method. This involved carving deep cutouts near the ends of logs that were then stacked on top of each other to form a wall. With this method, the logs forming a wall don't need to be "finished" in order to stack, because each log is held securely in place by its two notched ends, which interlock with the similar logs making adjacent walls.

The log cabin method is often used for building sturdy cabins in remote locations, because it gives a solid stable structure without needing precise woodworking skills or tools -- logs are cut, selected, cut to length, notched, and then simply stacked.

"Lincoln Logs" kits used model logs that were around the thickness of a human finger, and are a traditional toy in the US.
