Card No. 45: 12-man Space Station

1970s

After experimenting with 'Skylab', America expects to build a fully-fledged space station in Earth-orbit where men can live and work for long periods.

Launched separately and assembled in orbit by astronauts, cylindrical modules contain rooms for sleeping, personal hygiene and recreation as well as laboratories for science and technology, as shown in the cutaway illustration.

Tasks include astronomy, observation of land and sea, Earth-resources survey, meteorology and advance warning of storms, floods and air and water pollution, also envisaged are unique factory processes benefiting from weightlessness and vacuum.

Re-usable space shuttles keep the station supplied with air, food and other expendables.
