Card No. 34: Apollo Command and Service Modules
After preliminary manned and unmanned experiments in Earth-orbit, Apollo 8 carried Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders on man’s first flight around the Moon and back at Christmas 1968.
The two-part spacecraft comprises a 13,000 pound command module containing the crew, and a 53,000 pound service module with oxygen, power supply and a rocket engine for in-flight propulsion and braking.
During lunar landing missions, the craft waits in lunar orbit with one astronaut while two others descend in the Lunar Module.
