Card No. 10: Ariel 1
Britain's Ariel 1, built in America, was fitted with British scientific instruments, and was launched into a 754 by 242 mile orbit by an American Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral on Apr. 26, 1962.
The 132-pound satellite contained seven experiments, from three British universities, designed to provide purely scientific information about the ionosphere, the complicated region of particle and magnetic fields which surrounds the Earth at an altitude of about 100 miles.
Ariel 1 continued to transmit data until Nov. 1964, when it fell silent, but it was still in orbit at the beginning of 1970.
