Locomotives with a 4-8-2 wheel configuration.
A locomotive's hard steel wheels only have very limited contact with the track, so slippage can be a problem when hauling trains up significant slopes, even if the locomotive is sufficiently powerful.
The 4-8-2 "Mountain" layout was developed from of the earlier 4-6-2 designs, with the eight heavy central drive wheels giving enhanced traction in challenging environments.
