The history of Chipperfield's Circus dates back at least as far as the 1684 River Thames Frost Fair, where James Chipperfield put on a show of performing animals.
A succession of later Chipperfields put on travelling shows including manageries, clowns, puppets and novelties. At around the turn of the century, the list of attractions was extended to include Chipperfield's Electrograph Bioscope, an early form of cinema show.
Chipperfield's expanded during the 1930s, and by the 1950s had a Big Top with a seating capacity of six thousand.
