The French railway system's trains are currently run by SNCF, which was created in ~1938 by the state takeover of France's five main railway companies just before World War Two, a broadly similar operation to the merger of Britain's "Big Four" railways companies to form British Railways in 1948 shortly after the war ended.
Earlier French railway companies
The five railway companies were:
- Chemins de fer de l'Est (Eastern Railways)
- Chemins de fer de l'État (State Railways)
- Chemins de fer de l'Ouest, merged into "État" in 1908
PO-Midi in turn had been created from the merger of two smaller companies a few years earlier in 1934:- Chemins de fer de Paris à Orléans
- Chemins de fer du Midi)
