1927: Gamleys-branded Meccano Ltd. catalogue [image info]
The Gamleys chain of toy shops was founded in 1919 by Bill Lord, the principle of the name being that it would spring to mind when people thought of toy-sellers, being an amalgam of Gamages and Hamleys, arguably the country's two most famous toyshops – neither of which Gamleys had any relationship with. Towards the end, Gamleys had a chain of seventeen stores across the South-East, including Brighton, Hove, Littlehampton, Eastbourne and Hastings.
The company was based in Hove, and had a shop in Imperial Parade for around fifty years before it moved to the Churchill Square Shopping Centre in 2001. They also had a presence in the Eastbourne Arndale Centre from its opening in 1980.
Gamages closed several stores through 2007/2008, sold the Brighton and Maidstone stores to The Entertainer in 2008, and then closed its last store and closed down in late 2008.
