The Mamod range of road vehicles started out with the TE1 Traction Engine and SR1 Steamroller These were later updated to become the TE1a and SR1a, which had a reverse gear.

The success of the road vehicles meant that these gradually became the main product line, displacing the stationary engines, as it was more fun to collect a range of different road vehicles than it was to collect stationary engines.

The road vehicles' collectability was also enhanced by making them very different colours to make them really stand out against each other, so the bright red fire engine was the only red vehicle, the steam lorry was blue, the roadster was cream, the traction engines were normally green (the kit was black with yellow spokes) and a few items were also available in different colour choices.

Range

In 1979, the range of Mamod road vehicles consisted of four main live steam models, plus accessories.

  • SR1 – Steam Roadster, in white
  • SR1a – Steam Roller, black and green
  • TE1a – Traction Engine, black and green
  • SW1 – Steam Wagon, blue
  • LW1 - Lumber Wagon with three fake logs, for traction engine or steamroller
  • OW1 - Open Wagon, for traction engine or steamroller

By this point Mamod still hadn't really gotten the hang of product numbers and names, with "SR" signifying both "Steamroller" and "Steam Roadster".

Later, Mamod went on to also produce a live steam fire engine and double-decker bus.
