Nestlé was created by the 1905 merger of two 1866 companies, the Anglo-Swiss Milk Company, and Henri Nestlés Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé. The company originally specialised in condensed milk and baby formula products, and did very well during World War One and World War Two.
The First World War
The market for tinned condensed milk boomed during World War One, since the product represented a compact high-energy source of fat and carbohydrate that had a long storage life, could be used as military field rations or for domestic stockpiled provisions or emergency civilian food relief, and unlike many other forms of "utility" food, actually tasted quite nice.
Post-WW1
The company diversified into making chocolate after WW1, and its coffee brand Nescafé appeared at just the right time for the company to make a lot of money supplying the US military with coffee in WW2.
Nestlé used their resulting healthy bank balance to expand into other food markets by acquiring other companies, and now own a vast range of food brands.
