The city of New York has been home to some legendary deparment stores (with large toy departments), and as the USA's main Europe-facing port, was often where immigrant toymaking talent first landed (and often then stayed).

Modelling

The number of iconic pieces of architecture on the island of Manhattan is far too large to list, but some of the standout examples are (obviously) the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the wedge-shaped Flat-Iron Building, and the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge. Before 9-11, the twin towers of the World Trade Centre were also a key part of the Manhattan skyline.

The Statue of Liberty is another icon of New York city, offshore on its own island, but visible from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Vehicle-wise, the classic symbol of NYC is probably the bright yellow (high visibility) taxicab.

As a model

The New York City of 1964 was modelled as a huge 1:1200-scale ("waterline ships" scale) architectural model, titled "Panorama of the City of New York". Constructed as an attraction for the 1964 New York World's Fair, it is still on display at Queens Museum, NY, and is reckoned to still be be the largest city model in the world.
