Category:Numbered Stuart Turner stationary steam engines
By 1906, the Stuart Turner catalogue already included most of the numbered ST range, including engines No.1, No.2 and No.4 to No.9.
No.1 was Stuart Turner's very first engine, and appears to have continued to be produced ever since with only very minor variations, partly because of the historical significance of the design. The No.2 is illustrated in the 1906 catalogue with the same image, an identical price (£7 5s., or £8 10s. with reversing gear) and identical specifications apart from the stroke being reduced from two inches down to to one-and-a-half. We'd tend to assume that it was discontinued for being just too similar to the No.1. The No.4 is again a variation on the No.1, with the spoked flywheel replaced by a solid disc, to make it better suited for running at high speeds.
The later No.10 seems to have been a worthwhile design investment, as the engine was made available in both vertical and horizontal versions (No.10V and No.10H), and also a D10 or Double Ten based on a combined pair of vertical No.10 units. Demand for a horizontal counterpart of the D10 later subsequently produced the "Score" engine.

Stuart No.7a vertical stationary steam engine [image info]
STUART No. 7a
1-inch Bore, 1-inch Stroke Height 7½-inches
£2 5s. 0d.
The engine is well suited to beginners; a small lathe only is required. The modern standard with the "tunnel" crosshead guide is a simple job for the lathe, so what was at one time quie a difficult part to make with accuracy can now be tackled with confidence. Throughout the machining and fitting is of a simple character.

The No. 10 has always been one of the most popular in the STUART range. It is small enough to machine on a small lathe; at the same time it is large enough to handle easily.
The No. 10V is an excellent engine for driving a small dynamo or pump and, fitted with disc wheel instead of spoked flywheel, it makes an ideal marine engine. Ordinary or flash steam may be used.
An eight page leaflet containing very clear instructions is supplied with every No. 10 engine. To the beginner we can thoroughly recommend the book described on page 2, price 2/- post free.
