Roger Bamber (1944–2022) was a well-liked and universally respected photographer and photojournalist latterly based in Brighton, responsible for taking some of the best-known images of the city. His work on a number of national newspapers won him multiple awards.

One of Roger's most famous photographs, "The Station under the Station" was of Brighton Toy and Model Museum Founder Chris Littledale as seen from inside a canopied Gauge 0 Märklin railway station, on the museum's central layout. Some of Roger's classic photographs of Brighton also adorn the Brighton displays in the museum's lobby.

Dates

1960: – Starts a graphic design course at Leicester College of Art, aged 16.
1963: – Junior Photographer, Fleetway Publications.
1964:– Teaches Leicester College of Art's first photography course ... aged 19.
1965-1969: – Bamber comes to London, and on his first day job-hunting is immediately offered a job working for the Daily Mail.
1967: – Awarded the British Press Awards "Commercial and Industrial Photographer of the Year".
1969-1988: – Rupert Murdoch buys the broadsheet Sun newspaper and relaunches it as a tabloid to compete with the (image-centric) Daily Mirror. Bamber is persuaded to leave the Mail and be part of the Sun's team. As well as war reportage, Bamber documents the British music scene, getting an enviable level of access because musicians recognise him as an artist, and because he's likeable.
1973: – Photographer of the Year. Moved to Brighton.
~1988-: – Freelance photographer for The Observer, and then for The Guardian.
1990: – British Press Awards, for "The Amish"
1992: – Ilford Press Photographer of the Year, The Guardian, for "Punch Line"
1999: – works with Brighton and Hove Council on their successful bid for city status.
2004: – Photographer of the Year (Picture Editors' Awards)
2005: – University of Brighton, honorary master's degree
2009: – Retires from commercial newspaper photography, but continues with photography, producing a book, "Out of the Ordinary".
