The Terrier class of locomotives, built at Brighton Works, were designed to be able to cope with some of the LBSCR lines that couldn't take very heavy engines. With a classic and recognisable shape, they were (like terrier dogs) small but powerful for their size.

Notable examples

  • 40 BRIGHTON was shown off at the 1878 Paris Exhibition, where it won a gold medal.
  • 55 STEPNEY is preserved at the Bluebell Railway, and has been immortalised as a "Thomas the Tank Engine" character, "Stepney the Bluebell Engine"

1935 commentary

... the "Terrier" class, probably the most powerful locomotives for their diminuitive size that ever ran on any railway. Fifty of these engines were built between 1872 and 1880. They were of the 0-6-0 type; and were of such small dimensions because they had to run over light rails.
