Tubal Cain was the pseudonym of Tom D. Walshaw (1912–1998). Walshaw used the name to write a frankly ridiculous number of articles for the Model Engineer magazine (over 400), mostly on stationary steam engines and the workshop skills and equipment required to build them, along with a set of books including stationary steam engine designs.
The name "Tubal Cain" was borrowed form a Biblical character who was a metalworker. The pseudonym allowed Walshaw to keep this career separate from his academic career as senior lecturer and then head of Engineering at a number of university, college and polytechnic organisations.
