HMS Effingham

HMS Effingham was the last of the Hawkins-Class cruisers, completed in 1925.

Effingham has the odd distinction of being perhaps the only ship known to have been lost due to the use of a pencil.
The ship was lost in 1940 when a navigator drew a pencil line across a map to mark the ship's planned course, and the pencilmark obscured a charted rock on the map, which the ship then duly sailed straight into and hit. The crew disembarked and removed key equipment and materials, after which the ship was scuttled with a torpedo from an accompanying ship.
