Eastbourne Pier was designed by Eugenius Birch, and is currently rated as a Grade II* strructure.
The pier opened in June 1870 (with work having started in Spring 1866), and its buildings underwent an ongoing series of improvements and replacements up until 1901, with yet more work (albeit more sporadically) afterward (including the temporary fitting of gun emplacements during wartime!)
The Pier suffered a major fire in August 2014 in the amusement arcade hall.
