The Fireball XL-5 tv series was a 1962 Gerry Anderson production, using marionettes and filmed in black and white.
Syndicated in the US, the titular spacecraft – a cylinder with fins and a detachable nose section – was highly recognisable, and easy to reproduce in toy and model form.
The series was a merchandising success.
