A small diecast model of the black Mercury Friendship 7 Capsule, made by Ertl in 1990 as one of a set of four space models.
Friendship 7 was the third manned Mercury launch, on 20th February 1962, following two previous suborbital Mercury missions. This was the mission that made John Glenn Junior the first American to orbit the Earth (three times). The total mission time was fractionally under five hours.
In preservation
Friendship 7 was donated by NASA to the Smithsonian, who have it on public display.
