Card No. 19: Molniya
These Soviet satellites relay television, telegraph and multi-channel radio services across the USSR. Orbits are highly elliptical extending to nearly 25,000 miles in the northern hemisphere and dipping below 310 miles in the southern hemisphere.
A network of "Orbita" ground stations allows people in Siberia, the Far East and the Far North, to receive Moscow television.
A particularly interesting function of Molniya is the transmission of weather charts and newspaper facsimiles.
France has participated in Molniya experiments – Moscow to Paris.
