C’est La Garde, 1815
This diorama scene depicts a triumphal return to France from a foreign campaign of the troops of Napoleon’s "Old Garde", an elite formation acting as the Emperor’s bodyguard. The guard was composed of tall men with long service and proven bravery. They were absolutely devoted to the Emperor of France - Napoleon Bonaparte. Their distinctive uniform with the tall bearskin bonnet was recognised as they marched all over Europe following the "Little Corporal".
When Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo in 1805, the "Old Guard" made a "Last Stand" where most of them perished.
