Noah's Ark was a popular subject for toymakers in the late Eighteenth Century.
The simple and sturdy "ark" shape was easily built using basic woodworking skills, and didn't require much detailing. The ark's population included people as well as exotic animals to capture a child's imagination, and could be carved out of wood with minimal tools.
The ark body also functioned as a handy storage box for the figures, and the toy could be considered "educational", as it related to a Bible story.
