Noah's Ark and animals wooden toy (C19th) |
location: |
Arch Two , Area 17 1890s |
A wooden Noah's Ark set made in the Southern part of Germany in around ~1890.
Wooden Noah's Ark playsets were popular in the Nineteenth Century, as they included people, lots of animals, and the Ark itself doubled as a handy box for storage.
Brighton locals may find the proportions of the wooden ark's superstructure strangely familiar: it's based on the Biblical measurements ... and so is the uncompromising outline of St Bartholomew's Church, Brighton, the massive C19th brick church roughly Northeast of the Museum.
