Fifty White Assorted Single-Digit Numbered Single-Stud Square Bricks, Lego Accessory Pack number 237, made from around 1960 onwards.
Use
The main intended use of the bricks was for creating signs for small Lego shops, in conjunction with the letter bricks. The small Lego buildings designed for the Lego Town Plan Set tended to have beam bricks ready-printed with common signs such as "Esso Service", and "Dealer", the letter bricks let one modify these signs or make your own, and the number bricks then further widened the signage possibilities (if you wanted a to build a model a "7-ELEVEN" convenience store, the "letter-only" sets wouldn't be sufficient).
