Preparing the reminiscence boxes for an outreach session, May 2015 [image info]
As part of the Toys in the Community project, the museum has created a set of reminiscence boxes to help awaken people's memories of dolls, bears and construction toys.
The contents include toys and toy-related paraphernalia from a range of different eras, to act as triggers for childhood memories, encourage users to share anecdotes of their childhood influences, and provide context for discussion with the project volunteers.
The collection has been acquired specifically to be handled and explored by participants, and the selection has been chosen partly for their status as "classic" period toys, but also for their evocative look, period construction and tactility.
Outreach sessions
The boxes are being used as part of the Toys in the Community community outreach reminiscence sessions, which enable people to share their memories of toys. These free sessions are currently available for booking, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The boxes will also from part of the touring exhibition that will form part of the project's second stage, scheduled for Spring 2016.
