Sand Motor (Kliptiko) |
location: |
A red and silver "Sand Motor" or "Sand Wheel" made using the Kliptiko metal construction set.
Construction
The model is similar in principle to a water wheel, and has eleven "buckets", each mounted on two struts that clamp to the two central wheels.
The model would rotate when sand was allowed to trickle onto one side of the wheel.
Sand motors
These "sand motors" were sometimes used to drive simple lightweight models, but were pretty much eliminated by the 1920s by the availability of cheaper clockwork and electric motors, which were less messy for indoor use than a bag of sand and a large wheel.
