The original theatre
Strongly associated with William Shakespeare (bap.1564-1616), The original Globe was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's theatre company, and although the original is long gone, in 1970 the film-maker Sam Wanamaker (1919-1993) started a fundraising effort to build a replica of the original Globe on the same site.
The current Globe - a working theatre - was completed in 1997, and is currently the focus for the World Shakespeare Festival, which started on April 23, 2012.
