The Martin Lucas Super Mini Cine home projector system represented an ingenious way of trying to get the maximum use out of a limited strip of film.
"Mini Cine" strips divided the film strip area into a two-dimensional grid of images, stacked four images high. By winding the handle, the projectionist could step through the column of four images, one at a time, and then automatically continue with the next column of four, and the next .... or they could repeat a single set of four images, over and over.
This meant that a film could be designed as a simple linear sequence of (a large number of) still images, or could include short four-frame animations that the projectionist could linger over, and continue playing "on loop" until the audience had had enough, at which point they could continue with the rest of the sequence.
Years of fun with MiniCine
- It's a movie projector
- It's a still projector
- It's both in one!
