The Clown

The Clown or more commonly known at Joey acts in different ways from show to show. Some performers use Joey to introduce the show and then to move it from scene to scene. Others merely use him to introduce the sausages which leads to a bigger scene with the crocodile. In some shows Joey is the only character which Punch does not defeat and instead re-appears to mess with him at various points in the show.
Some performers will act out the 'counting scene' in which Mr Punch lays before him all his victims. As he then attempts to count them Joey will appear behind him and re-arrange the order of the figures therefore making Punch lose count.
The clown character is based on the real life Joseph Grimaldi who was a popular performer in the early 1800's.
