Along the East side of Brighton Station is a private road with a series of arches along one side known as Trafalgar Arches. The area was not well signposted until 2015, and didn't have an agreed name until the "Trafalgar Arches" name emerged and became increasingly recognised from around 2011 onwards. The creation of a market was suggested as part of the station renovation and area improvement plans that started to be implemented from around 2013 onwards.
It has clamper-controlled private parking.
Creation
The structure of Trafalgar Arches consists of a line of Victorian arched brickwork built to support the eastward upper extension of the station's tracks and platforms, which built over the top of the original Cab Road that ran up the side of the original 1841 station (turning the Cab Road into a tunnel), and then extended over further to the East. This created a series of arched spaces unconnected to the original understation, and cut off from from it by the Cab Road tunnel. These were then used for various businesses, including originally a horse hospital that serviced the many traders and cabowners that used horses and worked around the station.
The area facing the Arches, which is now occupied by C20th newbuilds, was originally occupied by the station's lower=level goods yards. These were originally served by a railway tunnel from the West that ducked down steeply under the main passenger tracks and emerged in the break in the middle of Trafalgar Arches, and later by a more circuitous (but less steep) route that crossed a small bridge over New England Road that has now been turned into a footbridge.
