The "Blue Train" was a luxury service that linked northern and southern France. The Calais-Mediterranée Express became known informally as "the Blue Train" (Le Train Bleu) and the name was later adopted formally for the train. It operated from 1886-2003, and was built by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL) as an immediate followup to their Orient Express luxury train service.

Agatha Christie...

Both the Blue Train and the Orient Express were patronised by rich international travellers, and Agatha Christie set one "Hercule Poirot" book on each (The Mystery of the Blue Train (1928) / Murder on the Orient Express (1934)).

The Mystery of the Blue Train was a reworking of Christie's earlier short story, The Plymouth Express, but set on a more international and more glamorous train service.

The sumptuously ornate 1900 Buffet de la Gare de Lyon was renamed Le Train Bleu in 1963, and was declared a Monument Historique in 1972.

Hornby's 1926 gauge 0 Riviera Blue Train Set was arguably the company's first train set to feature a realistically detailed model of a specific steam train.
