Card No. 44: Viking
The most advanced American unmanned spacecraft for which firm plans exist is Viking, designed to soft-land instruments on Mars to test whether life exists there.
Two 8,000-pound Vikings will be launched on the seven-month journey in 1975. Near Mars each will detach a 1,200-pound capsule which will be commanded to enter the Martian atmosphere.
Slowed by atmospheric braking and retro-rockets, they will soft-land and extend aerials and mechanical scoops. Soil samples will be examined for biological traces and the data transmitted to Earth.
