Beyond the Baths and the battery of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve are the Western Lawns. Many of these are sunk below the level of the Promenade and are further protected by thick hedges, so that in boisterous weather they are popular retreats for those wishing to play tennis, bowls or croquet or to listen to the excellent band.
