Georges Carette |
Georges Carette (1861-1954) moved from France to Germany in the late C19th, and founded his company Georges Carette & Cie. in the toymaking region of Nuremberg in 1896.
Originally manufacturing tinplate toys, Carette graduated to also producing steam-powered models in the early C20th. The Carette factory was justifiably proud of the range of printing processes that they had mastered for applying to tinplate, and Carette "printed tin" pieces are often notable for their bright colours and the amount of sharp detail, which some might say occasionally verges on overdetailing (albeit in an engaging way). as a result, the combination of authentic panelling outlines and and detailing squashed into a toylike outline can sometimes be reminiscent of one of Heath-Robinson's or Ronald Seale's inked cartoons.
The "Carette" name is best known in the UK for the gauge 0 coaches that Carette made for Bassett-Lowke.
Things started to become difficult for Georges as a non-German living in Germany when WW1 (1914-18) erupted, and he left the country. The business closed in 1917 after which Bassett-Lowke began to make their own versions of some of the Carette models, using the original Carette tooling that they'd acquired. This can sometimes make it difficult to tell the difference between a Bassett-Lowke wagon made for B-L by Carette, and a later Bassett-Lowke-made version, made in the UK using Carette tools and plans.
