Pelham Puppets Classifications

While the quintessential aesthetics of Pelham Puppets remained the same, the company had many different variation of design. Here is a short guide to identifying which classification a puppet would fall under:

LS

The LS models ran from 1946 to 1956. Their feet are made from small balls sliced in two, and their heads are spherical rather than being specifically moulded.

SL

The SL models have specially moulded heads rather than painted balls. The line began solely with designs of famous film and television characters, but was eventually expanded to other characters.

SL 63

The SL 63 line were made from wholly new moulds after the factory fire of 1961. Though initially popular the design was not as effective as earlier types when it came to actually performing, and half of the line were slowly phased out, culminating in a mass sale at half price in 1967.

SM

SM puppets are famous for their opening mouths.

SS

The SS model has a painted wooden ball for the head (much like the LS), the major difference being that the SS marionettes have "toggle" feet rather than half-balls like the LSes.

Jumpette

One of the Junior Puppet Range designs. These were incredibly simple puppets made for incredibly young children. The animals in this line simply had two strings, one attached to the head and one to the rear of the puppets. The human designs were a bit more complex but nothing compared to the majority of Pelhams. A single elastic string was attached to the head of the puppet if pulled the puppet would appear to jump, hence the design's name.
