History
Meccano Ltd. was established by Frank Hornby in 1908, as a means of manufacturing his previously patented invention, "Mechanics Made Easy"'. Meccano began to suffer financial difficulties in the 1960s and its journey from home-made British institution to the eventual sale of the brand in 1980 therefore offers something of a self-contained history of British manufacturing.
The word, "Meccano", was said to derive from the phrase "Make and Know", indicating Hornby's vision of educating children through play. However, if one was looking for a snappy word for a toy that taught mechanics, and was starting with the sound "meccan-", there were a limited number of simple variations available, and Meccano managed to become an internationally-recognised name without many people apparently knowing about any supposed deeper meaning to the word.
