A mixture of toys and dolls including "play shops".

The Toy Variety cabinet is a general-purpose display cabinet that shows a range of toys that don't obviously fit the themes of the other cabinets. The top part of the cabinet mostly holds miscellaneous tinplate pieces, including cars and aeroplanes.

Toy shops

Recently we've been using the central region of the cabinet to show "room-related" pieces, and it currently holds an Edwardian wooden shop, a French schoolroom, a model Marks and Spencers shop and a "Circle Grocers" shop.

Early wooden toys

Our long-term plan for the cabinet is to develop the current emphasis of the bottom of the cabinet on very early and Nineteenth-Century mostly-wooden toys made in the UK (or for the UK market) before the advent of successful UK metal toy production.

  • circa 1860s – Carved bone "Spellicans" game.
  • circa 1870 – Treen wooden spinning-top.
  • circa 1890 – Wooden Noah's Ark with animals
  • circa 1890 – papier mache bulldog "growler"
  • circa 1910 - Edwardian wooden shop
