Card No. 01: The Airspeed Courier (Great Britain)
The "Courier" was the first aeroplane to be produced in this country embodying the retractable undercarriage. When the wheels are drawn up into the wing (as in the illustration), so much resistance is saved that it is worth an extra 10 m.p.h. on the top speed. The “Courier” isa very useful commercial monoplane, seating five passengers and one pilot. It has a cruising speed of about 143 m.p.h. and is used mainly on short airline routes and for special taxi flights. The pilot’s exceedingly good viewpoint is a feature of the machine.
