The Mamod range of stationary steam engines came into existence partly due to Hobbies' need to find an alternative supplier after Geoffrey Bowman decided to do other things.
The 1930s range
In the late Thirties, Malin (Engineers Ltd. was advertising six models, with four main models, S.E.1 to S.E.4 ("S.E." for "Steam Engine") being an increasing size of engine mounted on a sturdy red Meccano-compatible metal plinth, and two smaller "Mamod Minor" models, M.M.1 and M.M.2 having a smaller footprint, with the boiler mounted on a more basic Meccano-style plate and the piston and flywheel attached to the boiler.
The Meccano Steam Engine
The 1970s saw Meccano decide to resurrect the idea of a Meccano Steam Engine, amd Mamod supplied Meccano with a suitably redesigned rather modern-looking unit with a silver horizontal boiler on a black base, mounted on a bright yellow folded Meccano plate that also provided the mountings for the drive shaft and piston, in line with the boiler.
The 1970s range
The production of the engine for Meccano seems to have stimulated Mamod to rearrange their stationary engine range. Renamed SP1 to SP5 (with SP standing for Steam Power), this removed the ambiguity over whether a "steam engine" was supposed to refer to a static unit or a locomotive.
- SP3 was essentially the same as a Meccano Steam Engine, but with the Meccano branding replaced by Mamod branding, and with a baseplate that was silver metal rather than yellow.
All the other units had typical Mamod red raised plinths with Meccano-style edge holes, and now also had tall black chimneys designed to look like factory chimneys, with the letter M,A,M,O,D in gold, as a vertical sequence.
- SP1 and SP2 were similar to the Mamod Minor engines in having the drive axle and flywheel, and associated mechanics attached to the boiler
- SP4 was a single-cylinder engine comparable to the S.E.2, and
- SP5 was a double-cylinder engine comparable to the S.E.3.
